An easter egg is when a movie has something in it that relates or refers to another movie.

For example, in Finding Nemo by Pixar, there's a scene in the dentist's office that shows some toys on the floor. If you look closely, you can see that one toy is Mike from Monster's, Inc., one is Buzz Lightyear from Toy Story, and there is one from a movie that is yet to be released from Disney and Pixar. And, if you watch for a few more seconds, you'll see a truck pass in the window.. and that truck is the same Pizza Planet delivery truck from Toy Story.

Because when you go Easter Egg hunting, it's a surprise when you find one. Just like if you happen to spot something in a movie that maybe doesn't belong, or perhaps is a reference to another movie, then it's a surprise.

Directors put Easter Eggs in movies for a lot of reasons. Some, like Alfred Hitchcock, put certain things in every movie they make so that movie-goers will recognize that it's their work. Sort of like a signature. Others, like Disney movies, directors include Easter Eggs just for the fun of it, so that you recongize things from other Disney, or more recently, Pixar movies. Easter Eggs are usually included in a movie because the people who made it want to know if you are paying attention. It's kind of like a game.
