Something that someone mentioned to me last night that seemed like a good idea...

Could the shot timer be changed (particularly in tourneys) to something along the lines of a chess clock?

Each player gets say 10 minutes. When its your shot the clock counts down and when you have played it switches to your opponent.

This may help speed up play, would mean you could play fast when you needed to but also take time to consider a shot if you needed to and would also penalise slow players by dqing the one whose shot clock runs out if a game is not fully completed.

May be technical reasons why it wouldnt work or couldnt be done, connection problems or whatever but it seems like a possibilty to me.

Any views?

I suppose in theory you could play to deliberately dq your opponent which would be a disadvantage but I am not sure that you could do this easily as long as the amount of time each player started with was reasonable.

Thats a fantastic idea.

Ever tried to play a tactical frame with 10 secs shot timer.

A very good idea I think, provided the amount of time is chosen carefully.

Nah funkychess... nope lol

But class idea piggy... deffinately would stop your opponent from trying to get you DQ'd, seen this happen before and it's happened to me

Would love to see this idea introduced to funkypool.

I'd like funkychess lol

Dont know what the pieces would be though.

There are a few problems with a shot clock though. If someone enters a game and then doesn't play a shot, the other player would be sat there for 10 minutes before the other got logged out. People would also sit for about 8 minutes just to annoy people and then start playing.

I've also been in tactical games that have lasted 15 minutes, this might not be possible if there was too short a time allocated to each player.

All good points squeezy. If it was restricted to tournament games only you may have to sit around and wait while the clock ran down but that is not necessarily much different to waiting for your next round match now apart from not being able to leave and go and play elsewhere perhaps. Maybe some sort of automatic loss if you havent played a shot for say 2/3 minutes?

I love this particular bit.

It bugs me to no end when a slow opponent manages to drag out the time to dq both players in a game he knows he's losing. This would fix that.

I've always like the idea of a shot timer in tournament games so the player who has spent the least time at the table goes through.

The idea of completely replacing individual shot times hasn't been mentioned before that i can remember.

I dont think this could b applied to speed tourneys (defeats the point!), but for others it could work.

Ideally it would need to apply per round, as opposed to per game, to avoid abuse.
