A while back i used to get very angry and peoples ability to harass people and swear etc and seemingly get away with it.
This is obviously because, as it stands at the moment one or two incidents of harassment just isnt enough to permanantly ban someone. I know the mods do the best they possibly can but....

Would it be better to clearly state in the terms and conditions, that an act of harassment or the use of any bad language will result in a ban (temporary or permanant depending on severity)

I realise this has been covered before to a certain extent. Is it time to tighten up the rules, given the extent to which the site has now grown ?

In relation to people abusing the system. The usual stuff. The usual tools you get in the various rooms.

Users using bad language or harrassment already receive bans according to the seriousness of their actions - anything from a day ban to a permanent ban. Persistant offenders will always receive a permanent ban.

Also, with the send complaint function now being used regularly, and new and quicker systems in place behind the scenes, it's becoming difficult to get away with offensive behaviour. As long as it's reported, it will be dealt with.

I agree that a more forthright warning would be a good idea. Not sure it should be in the Terms of Service though, as many people tend to skip the 'small print'.

Working on the assumption that the message needs to reach new users as they join, a note in the Validation Email might be good.

Thats What i meant!

Im still not understanding what you mean by "Tightning the rules up"

There was a "BANNED USER" On yesterday, as someone pointed out to me, they just go create a new name !!

My meaning of 'tightening of the rules' is pretty self explainatory. Take the rules and tighten them up. Harsher punishment basically. Working as both a deterant and a solution.

Then people would get 'Booted' For...........???

Spamming? Giving personal info out?

May as well just scrap booting then if thats the case

In my opinion people should be booted automatically for any swearing, with the reason being given of course.

I'm sure someone has brought up automatic booting before, but it just doesn't work unless you have foolproof swear filter (which I believe is virtually impossible). People are booted when mods are on, but as they are all volunteers and have other commitments you can't guarantee there will always be one on in every room being used

I think the authoritarian is coming out in you Scaley!

I think things are fine as they are, you're always going to have some people who swear and brakes rules, and there's always going to be mods to stop them. I can't see how much harsher you could punish any rule breaking, do you ban people for swearing once or twice? I think not. Cheaters get reset, if it's persistant, they get banned, i don't know how else a punishment can be harsher. Real bad offenders get an IP ban! It goes on......

Paula, How could you? Swearing is for those who are unable to think constructively. Tsk tsk

In the public chat rooms you shouldnt swear whether in a 'jokey' way or not. Its a family site.

In private rooms do what you like, but thats not the issue here.

Bob i wasnt suggesting auto booting by a bot or whatever.

Edit - I meant the mods should automatically boot the culprit.

You then can't say that a mod will be on at all times to boot people who swear, and often I have seen people just stop when a mods enters so they don't get caught, then start again when they leave. The problem is likely to persist no metter how "authoritarian" you make it

Maybe another way to describe it is a lower intervention level?

Zero tolerance towards swearing whilst deliberately avoiding the chat filter for example?

regarding your comments hothead_bob, as Martin_blank said, the system is more effecient now than ever and if you use the send complaint feature the offending person will be dealt with.

The increase in moderator numbers has already had a noticable positive effect.

No matter how many mods there are, there is always someone that "forgets" -- and by that, I mean "ignores" -- that this is indeed a family site and choose to abuse the site anyway. There's never a guarantee that a mod will be on to stop the verbal abuse, and we can't expect everyone to all be little angels and mind their tongue. Short of completely removing chat rooms and forums so that this site is entirely pool-based, we just do the best we can with the time that we are given.

Like Spinner and Martin_Blank said, the "Send Complaint" button is truly the best way to catch abusive members when a mod is not available. Actions will be taken accordingly against the member, because mods cannot take one person's word over another if we did not see the crime. With a chat log, we have proof of the foul play, and can therefore take action.

Seeing as we cannot be on here 24/7, a little help from fellow do-good members is always appreciated.

We do have a list of the basic chat room rules here:
http://www.funkypool.com/help.do?section=chat_room_rules

It's unlikely a rulebreaker would read this, but it's there to have clarity over the chat room policy.
