spinner have you got any advice of what sort of software people should use to prevent this bug/virus from occurring.

I always reccomend AVG antivirus. Its free for personal use and based purely on pracical experience it is better that Norton Professional.

However, the "MSN Virus" type of program being described here can often be ignored by antivirus programs due to the clicking of a link being considered acceptance to install. (this is the biggest probem with Firefox and also exists in Windows "Live" messenger)

There are so many varients that n one solution will work for everything. A good start is to download the windows "malicious software removal tool" from the microsoft website.

Do be wary of downloading endless "spyware/adware" etc programs, as these are often dodgy (especially if from mass download sites like download.com etc)

avg picked up 2 viruses one was really deep into the computer but we healed them and deleted them and as far as i know we havent had a problem since. Thanks everyone for your help and sincere apologies to anyone who picked up the virus from me - it wasn't deliberate i promise.

the viruses were generic worms if anyone wanted to know
