I thought it was prostitution?
Recipe for prostitution
1 man
1 woman
A dash of cash
1. Using the woman, stir the man
2. Mix them together
3. Extract the cash from the man and stir it into the woman (after the man has been thoroughly stirred into the woman)

Aphids are born pregnant. In fact, they are pregnant before they are born. The common aphid, of which there are 4400 species, produces only female offspring, which are already pregnant with the next generation, allowing for quick multiplication of their numbers. In their growing phase, they may become males, or remain asexual.

That's because human population grows exponentially. Everything is on a food chain, right? The only thing above us is natural phenomena, like earthquakes and meteors, so those might not really count as being above us. Until something occurs (other than humans killing humans), we are the top of the chain, and the population will continue to grow expontenially until, basically, our planet fails.
I had to write a paper on this once, I think, about exponential growth of humans. If you look at the statistics of the overall human population since...say, 1 AD or whatever (pick a date), the increase is pretty amazing, and also disturbing.

I know I read Rome somewhere before, but http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Historical_urban_community_sizes doesn't seem to want to give it, annoyingly.
