...about their win percentage? I find it really stupid that when people I am playing lose to me and it's their first few games on that account, they then have to restart their account just to get a good win percentage..

In my eyes, that means nothing, it's all about that rank!! Am I missing something here, because I find caring about your win percentage really pathetic.

Win % is surely more important than rank nath_brum. You can gain rank through luck, as you can win %. But say for instance someone gets to 800 rank and then doesnt play again for ages. They will look like that rank yes for a long time. But what if they had a good run of luck? what if they played out of their skin. The way to judge a player is over time. Consistency. If you are very consitent you will have a very good win %. Your rank should back this up but if your rank is good and you lose it hits you hard. You can lose 4 rank points for a game. If this happened 5 times in a row you lose 20 points. It would appear you not as good as it seemed. however it would take you 20 games just to get your rank back and that is winning consecutively, no losses. Win % takes your overall stats from your time on funkypool. Not just your current form. Hence this shows how good you really are.

Rank differentiates between who you play; high percentage can be gained by playing novices and newbies all day!

Ok phillippe124, if you wanna think like that.. but, surely people restarting their account because they lost a game should be classed as cheating?

Wanting a high win percentage is fine. Solution to this is: win your games. But restarting your account to get a high win percentage is pathetic.

Btw, since i got about 730, i havent dropped below it. Yet my win percentage is only 49%.. Maybe because I play lots of friendlies against Pro's to try and learn from them and get better at this game..

Doesn't reflect how good (or bad lol) of a player I am.

Resetting your account because you lose a few games is just holding off the inevitable, because even the best players lose somewhere along the line.

Win percentage is a very good way to judge the true ability of a player. I'll use squeezy as an example:

Wins: 11,305
Losses: 3,739
Win Percentage: 75%

This shows me he is a consistent player, winning 3 games out of every 4 he plays. His rank at the moment is 883.0, but like Philippe said it could be 783.0.

Rank shows your ability at the present time, but win percentage gives a more accurate picture to the true ability of a player in my mind.

So that's why people care so much about the win percentage. It shows your consistency, and it's this important factor that makes or breaks a player.

I think the reason reset is because they are searching for perfection. Unfortunately you cant have perfection. You will lose. But try telling people that. Its just what people wanna do nath, its their choice.

The winning percentage is only a good indication of a players ability if they play players at random, a cross section of all funkypool users. This is the reason there is no win percentage table, it is too open for manipulation by people playing only the lower ranked players.

The ranking table is more important - it is not open for manipulation by users (a lot of people have tried only playing people of a certain ranking to attempt to gain advantage - it doesn't work).

I agree with eddie_felson, rank does tend to show current form compared to lifetime history. This is deliberate, of course, just because a player used to be good, should they still be near the top of the rankings?

Don't go just on rank lads, alot of the better players on funkypool have poor rank. Personally I think: _perfection_, revenge, fry, chip_fork, bobkins etc. All of those and many more have relatively poor rank compared to their actual ability. I think the rule of permanent bannings nowadays is good, as now we aren't getting players such as myself as a good example *blows own horn yet again* who are pretty decent players who have been virtuoso in the past, but as their previous account has been banned their stats don't reflect their actual ability. This problem will be solved now as and when IP bans are issued the user won't be able to get on the game.

Sorry if that didn't make much sence....

There are many people, me included, who don't have time to play the ranked games needed to stay at the top.

dresden - that made perfect sense m8!

I have always taken win % to be a better reflection of a players ability provided they have played a decent quantity of games, however this is because i assumed win% was calculated across all non-rank games as well. Is this the case?

Different people care about different things, thats just life. I love the game and the community here, hence if someone really wants to win i'll happily let em!

Life's too short...

well said spinner
i dont mind losing to a lower rank or even a higher rank too if there is a good game and respect.
I lost 20 points to someone once but there was good manners between us both and was all close games i didnt care one bit...........well done to them is what i thought.

Its not life changing if ur good or bad or wat ur rank or % is i use mine as a guide to myself, not to others and have fun along the way.

Your wins and losses records includes every game, friendly, tournament and ranked. The win percentage is evaluated using these totals, so, yes, you are correct.

Rankings in other sports are rated on the tournaments and leagues you play. There's very few (I struggle to think of any) sports where people play solely for the means to gain ranking points. Football, tennis and golf all have ranked events, but the aim is to win the tournament, not to just reach number 1 in the rankings.

I personally would not be adverse to having a similar structure on here. Basically ensuring all funkypool league (when available) and tournament games to be ranked, and not to have ANY games solely for rankings.

The rankings would then become an estimate of how good a player is, not a primary achievement to aim at.
