It was originally brought into the real game so that the viewers could see the spin that the players were putting on the cue ball. I guess nick liked that idea and included it on here.

Also a lot of members asked for it as well

still dont get it.. doesnt show the spin THAT well.. surely there a better ways than a chicken- poxed covered ball?

There probably is, but thats what they use at the moment

Its a proper US cue ball, just like you use to play US pool in real life...
