I wouldn't go that far - it has some good points. However, they're not particularly original nor well written. On the plus side they have encouraged more children (and adults ) to read, which in my opinion can only be a good thing

It is not! It has inspired thousands of people to come out their shells and write out their own stories, me for one. The idea may not be quite original, but it has led to tons of other original works of art by people who may otherwise not been brave enough to share their stories. Did you know that J.K. Rowling used to be a single mother who struggled for years to raise a family?
