is it possible to have a pass shot option, as in some scenarios you cant win especially if opponent pots your ball to gain an advantage or your ball isnt available.
its ok in UK you get 2 shot carryon but in US and 9 Ball games where sometimes even ball in hand doesn't help this can change whole situation.
those who play snooker will know what i mean

Hmm... In 8 ball and in 9 ball, you can place the white anywhere you want. 1) Are there situations where it would be better to put your opponent back in than to place the white anywhere and play? 2) Do the standard versions of those other games have it?

In effect you do have a pass option in those games by simply scratching the white yourself?
The only problem with that in 8 Ball is there is nothing that brings the game to a head like there is potentially in 9 Ball (3 foul rule).

But then your opponent has ball in hand; he's not bound to play it from where it was at the end of his shot

But them's the rules - any non-legal shot leads to ball in hand.
That is the only game where you can play a deliberate foul and possibly gain an advantage by forcing your opponent to play from a difficult position. If there was a pass rule, Straight is the only game it would need considering for.
However that would mean moving away from the accurate rules of the game, although that's less of a problem in Straight as the accurate rules already aren't followed.

of course its for this thread, its about pass shot option
ok let me explain it a bit.
8US - yes you can keep potting white but isn't that classed as unsporting?
9US - yes you can pot white up to twice and 3rd time you must hit a ball and thats where problem lies as in an impossible situation where you cannot win and any kind of contact may cause you to lose the frame.

Whats wrong with potting the wrong ball to gain an advantage? It ain't in the actual rules of the game that you can't do that and generally leads to a chance for your opponent to come in and have a good chance anyway.
Good players stick to the rules to win games, the best players bend the rules to take the advantage.

8US has the same problem that snooker has to an extent.
It is possible to get into a position of stalemate which, within real life rules, leads to a re-rack.
Stalemates and re-racks have been discussed before. I still believe a simple automatic stalemate/re-rack option for 8US that could be introduced would be for it to take place after five consecutive foul shots by each player.
In 9 Ball the same will not happen as your opponent will reach the 3rd foul before you do. Therefore they either have to play a good recovery shot, which obviously you could have done yourself, play a bad recovery shot in which case you have the advantage back or make three consecutive fouls and lose!

So why are you wanting to change the rules to put people off doing it? Or have I misunderstood this thread?
16:48 Mon 23 May 11 (BST) [Link]
people can do it, i have no objections since ive done it myself also but i just feel that opponent should have a pass shot option available to them just in case they are in a no win situation after a foul.

Deliberate fouls and tactics are part of Pool unlike Snooker.
In 8US if they have placed you in a difficult situation after a foul it is either a fluke (oh well nevermind they happen ) or good play (oh well nevermind ). Ultimately though there is no getting away from the fact that a foul results in ball in hand. If you want to pass play back to your opponent you need only scratch the white.
In 9US you will never be in a no win situation after a foul as both players are left with the same ball on.

James, isn't the idea of deliberately fouling to put your opponent in a difficult - sometimes no win - situation anyway? Meaning their is no point in having a pass play option. Like Chris said, you can place the cue ball anywhere on the table after a foul meaning while you may not be able to pot a ball, you should be able to hit one anyway. I don't see the use to implement your idea at all.
The phrase "if you can't beat them, join them" comes to mind.
