What happened in this case is right. To put it simply, he hasn't disabled automatic tournament win (which you do by clicking in the game window options > game and tick the box at the bottom)

So, when he reached 35, it came up with the first message "alvinglenn obtained points and can play on until missing". But then you left, resulting in the game ending while he was still on a run.

Precisely. He hasn't disabled automatic tournament win. With it disabled, a player can continue his/her run in any game type in a tournament, allowing the player to continue attempting a big run in straight, a 7-balling or a run out.
