A massive earthquake of 8.8 has rocked Chile, killing at least 147 in the immediate aftermath.
The capital Santiago has lost electricity and phone lines, and a further threat of Tsunami's for Australia (ocean surges expected in a couple of hours right where I am) and other pacific nations are currently on warning.
http://news.ninemsn.com.au/article.aspx?id=1018249 for the Chile Earthquake
and for those who read this within and hour or so of me posting this, here is Queensland's Tsunami alert (its not a full scale warning) - http://www.bom.gov.au/tsunami/qld_alerts.shtml
Hopefully we will not hear of any major Tsunami's, and we can only prey that we don't see the repeated devistation of Haiti and Port Au Prince on our TV's once again.

From CNN
"Hawaii "dodged a bullet" today after a quake-triggered tsunami hit the islands with smaller-than-expected waves, an official said. A quake off Chile caused the tsunami."

40cm surges have hit Norfolk Island (small island off Australia).
The current warning from the Tsunami Centre is that people should not enter the ocean, at all costs as there will be a rise in sea levels over the next few hours in Australia, and "possibly into Monday" (its Sunday morning here right now).
So they are not expecting large waves, just a VERY strong current in and out and for the next day or so.

Major Tsunami warnings issued in Japan.
http://www.jma.go.jp/en/tsunami/
Reading a new article, Japan has gone into a state of panic, although residents are 'remaining calm'
http://news.ninemsn.com.au/world/1018390/Japan-orders-evacuate-tsunami
Lets hope for the best in disaster prone Japan.
An earthquake in 1960 around Chile, measuring 9.5 caused a major Tsunami in Japan, killing over 100 people - so while Australia's threat is easing off, Japan is on edge.

Japan has been nearly untouched, as the major threat passes. The largest wave was 1.2m. But with recent Tsunami's around the South Pacific and incidents in Japan with Tsunami's, I dont blame the Japanese for giving out major warnings, even with the national broadcaster NHK going into "Emergency Mode".
Australia has been cleared of any further Tsunami threat, only the warning of very strong ocean currents in the Tasman Sea (sea that lies between Australia and New Zealand).
Lets hope that Chile can bounce back from this disaster, and lets prey that we don't see the devistation that we saw in Haiti.
