I was just in a game room and i had clicked to play, then i saw that the tourny was on so i decided that i wouldn't have time to play so i left just before the last person clicked and it didnt pop up with the message that a game had just started. It was like this:

GAME: bounty9 (675.0, Newbie), swirl (606.1, Newbie), zantetsukenz (769.2)
TOURNAMENT: You successfully join the 8 Ball UK Tournament. Tournament home -
You join chat room
GAME: Rack 1. bounty9 (3), zantetsukenz (3), swirl (3)
GAME: Match abandoned as you decided not to play

so i was waiting for the tourny to start then this popped up:

RESULT: Killer Pool Ranked - swirl wins! (2 lives, potted 9 of 10, safe 3 of 9)
RANKINGS: swirl 617.5 (+11.4), bounty9 670.3 (-4.7), zantetsukenz 763.6 (-5.6)

This is unfair because it didnt give me the option to stay because a game had started

Is this normal or did i just have incredibly bad timing?

That line in bold shows that the game had started. Unlucky...

The better question is why the game would start, including you, if you never clicked the "Play" button...

Not only must you have left the game as the final player entered, you must also have been (on the server side) considered part of that game when the "start game" timeout kicked in 30 seconds later...

he did click play.

yeah i joined chat room so it should have said a game has just started if you leave now it will count as a loss...etc

This is deliberate - you can leave killer at any time.

Killer does not store abandoned game stats and will never ask for confirmation before leaving.
