Google say they have free downloads but i can't download of them so i use a site i like.

there are some free downloads, to access them you have to go to the artist's page and if any of the tracks on there says "full mp3 download" or something similar, i think you just click on em (havent downloaded from there in a while so it may have changed).

when you "scrobble" (play music on your computer and lastfm takes a note of it), lastfm can then suggest similar artists that you can have a listen to. most of the tracks are just 30 sec previews, but you can still get a good idea of how the artist/band sounds, and from there if you like what you hear, acquire some of their stuff however you do

its also good if you're in a band and want another place on the net to showcase some of your material (as opposed to myspace). that way people who listen to similar artists can browse your page and have a listen to your stuff (good for alot of indie artists that dont have multi million dollar marketing budgets heh)
