Language? Probably, at least as far as basic spelling and grammar are concerned. This is because of things like the printing press and (more recently) the mass media and the internet, petrifying the standards of the language.

My mum is a linguist and i wish i could show you one of the books she has, it has a "language tree" in it, i couldn't find one as detailed online. There are different groups of languages and they all derive and build on older ones. The more populated the earth got and the more people spread the more dialects you get for a certain group of languages.
A good example for where words come from is "googol", A googol is the large number 1x10^100, that is, the digit 1 followed by one hundred zeros (in decimal representation). It was just simply made up. But a lot of times new languages just borrow from older languages.
I grew up in a former USSR country and the native language there is poorly developed and a lot of new words are simply borrowed from Russian or other languages. Like photocopying was simply referred to as xeroxing lol. Back at home it never occurred to me it was a brand!
I don't know how people came up with first words, but I am sure it's similar to how babies do it. They come up with their own words all the time.
