i just played the most cowardly player, purposly fouling and potting my balls because he had his last ball jammed between the black and the middle pocket. im obviosly going to play safe bacause i cannot pot the black.......

the 3 fouls rule should be added to 8ball US, its rediculous
+ the rule would be no harm because its very difficult to foul 3 time in 8-ball unless your a coward and purposly foul, not playing to the rules

There's some discussion of the various aspects of different fouling across the various games at http://www.funkypool.com/viewTopic.do?topicid=14200&page=1 and http://www.funkypool.com/viewTopic.do?topicid=14052&page=1 . I've resorted to it myself at times, and seem my opponent do it too in the same game. Made for a very interesting tactical cat-and-mouse game!

Did you find that when he ran out, or nearly ran out, of balls of yours to pot that he had to make an attempt at the black or else you'd have the major advantage of being able to set yourself up on the black?

Yeah sure, thats right!

You need every chance to win.. otherwise you would just be letting your oppenent win!

Its worth it for 2 or 3 points..

Its a thing I call 'Skill' and good playing.

Pool doesn't have to be a pretty and attractive game all the time... What you experienced is the dirty side of playing. Tactics that require you to do anything to win, even foul. It is interesting, but there is a way around it. Dirty tactics and dirty players are all over this website.

Learn to deal with it.

Lol you cant say that people that play like that are are dirty, there is always a possibility of winning.

I'm not one of those ''Dirty players'' as you call them but it it is harsh to name them like that.

Its a very nasty way of playing but a clever way to.

Haven't you contradicted yourself there?

Ok, the "nasty" players play like that.

I consider it very dirty and scrappy when I have to resort to playing by fouls. I don't like it. Therefore, I consider it a "dirty" way of playing as it isn't conventional.

I admit I do play like this, but only when it is absolutely neccessary.

I think most people would play a foul shot if playing a legal shot would leave them at a disadvantage.

There's no way of stopping this so it's one we have to live with.

Like I said, whatever you regard this playing style as, whether it be dirty or skillful, it's here to stay

A foul has a very clearly defined consequence. That consequence is balanced to overall be as fair and warranted as possible, without breaking the game in either direction.

The game cannot possibly distinguish between a deliberate and an accidental foul so all fouls clearly has to have the same consequence. Increasing the consequences of a foul is not as easy as many like to believe. One of the outcomes of making fouling have harsher consequences is that newbies would suffer a lot.

Deliberately fouling is perfectly sound strategy, it's not unsporting, it's not contrary to the spirit of the game, it's not wrong on any level what so ever.
