about an hour ago i was just chatting to friends on here, nothing special and then my screen flickereed into some strange blue screen with loads of silverish writing all over the screen saying warning this, and windows has had aproblem and needs to shutdown.
can anyone shed light as to why this happened?
it seems to be ok now.

I've had blue screen crashes before, but they would come up with funny error codes like: (0x0000000e13) and things like that as well as error codes such as: KERNAL_STACK_INPAGE_ERROR.
I tried to clear it but the techies were no help to me (on the net or at PC World) and I left it.
Now everything runs dandy! It went from 4 or 5 crashes a day to 0 overnight!
None of my data ever went missing or was deleted, so I don't think it is that bad...

My computer completely died before (so i though lol) and on startup it dished me one of those screens, with similar messages, then ofcourse I couldn't stop my comp from auto shutdown on system failure.
Wasn't until I bought a whole new system tI was told all I needed to do was re-install windows lol... might be same sorta problem

Check with spinner, but id do a system restore to maybe two/three days before this happened so that the virus or whatever causes it isnt on your system.

Ah!
When I reported my problem to Microsoft, the help centre said maybe my hard drive cables were interfering with my circuit board.
Maybe when your PC overheated, it "melted" the hard drive cables which are interfering with your system!

Bit of a Eureka! moment for me in my books lol

Sounds like a simple case of overheating, so the hardware of the laptop kicked in and shut it down.
If there wasn't an obvious reason for it overheating then it would be wise to get it checked out pretty sharpish. A replacement fan is a lot cheaper than a replacement laptop!

yeah, even with it on now, and only msn and funky running, its fair hot in the bottom left corner(ish) of the underside of the laptop.
it seems to create a bit of lag in the game too, ive got the shockwave player turned off to make the adverts less annoying, but sometimes when i shoot the cursor takes a while to load etc.
again thanks for the help

Ive heard of this its a BSOD i believe? (blue screen of death) somtimes this can be serious causing your system to not work unless you install another copy of windows down to either a hardware or software problems, so keep your wits about you on what you do on your comp.
Hope this helps.

BSOD's are very rare and usually due to the user installing dodgy software or messing about with system settings in an attempt to be an 311et3 h4x0r or the like..
This definitely sounds like a cooling problem and shouldn't be *too* expensive to fix (nothing like a replacement screen, for example)
However, the way laptop prices have plummeted recently, do get a detailed quote first!

I would recommend first backing up your data and reinstalling windows. I have had this occur because software problems cause cpu overheating. reinstalling windows should be the first port of call. Then see the pro's if problems persist.
