I bought one of the above routers recently, in order to use it with my desktop PC and also to connect wirelessly to my laptop.

The desktop is Windows XP and the laptop is Vista. I can get it to work with the laptop, but when running the setup CD on the desktop it gets as far as trying to load the router settings, but then it won't go any further.

It loads Internet Explorer and tries to connect to 192.168.0.1, being the IP address of the router.

The router obviously works because it runs on the laptop, but can anybody shed any light as to why it's not working with my desktop?

Hmmm, what happens when you say "it won't go any further"?

The router settings are supposed to load. Internet Explorer opens, showing 192.168.0.1, but the settings don't appear.

I know what is supposed to happen, because it works with my laptop.

Are you sure the cd is compatible with xp and not just with vista?

I haven't checked it, I just assumed that it would be. It does seem to run really slow though, there is a few seconds pause between the setup screens after you've clicked the "next" button.

Have a look on the box, it will state what Operating systems are compatible. It should be compatible but you never know.

I am going to give it a try on another PC that runs XP.

At least that way I might be able to isolate the problem.

Sounds like some sort of firewall software you have on the desktop is is blocking http connections, specifically 192.168.0.1

This is a common fault if you have secondary so called "security" software installed along with the native windows firewall.

Make sure those are disabled and have another go.

Quick update - worked fine on other desktop.

I have had a trawl around the internet and was advised to try pinging 192.168.0.1. When I try this, there is no response.

Windows firewall is disabled.
