I know this has been brought up many times in the past but here goes again.
I have had an idea on how they could work and i apologise in advance if this has been mentioned before.

The tournament would act as normal except every game is ranked. As you proceed through the rounds beating opponents, the rank you are gettin from each opponent could be added together as you go through and if you win the whole tournament, you then get the rank that you have been winning from your opponents.

Na. Keep it as it is.

Nothing worse than it being to complicated. And the top players would just run away even more from the other, worse players.

well, what about the higher the rank, the less of the rank they get? that ties in with with how the normal ranking system works

i dont think adding it up would be best, just liked ranked games or a standard +1 per win or something
