Hi, I was wondering, why when you join as a member, your starting points begin from 675.0, why such a random number, why not start from 0 and work your way up and go to minus numbers if you get past 0... Asking just out of interest, I'd like to know

Well the ratings go from 500-100 so starting at 0 would be harsh lol.

It needs to be a number that allows new users to find a challenge to keep while not making it too easy, also needs to account for players restarting so cant be too low because it would lower the ratings of the players at the top who play them more.

Used to be 75.0 when the ratings were up to 100.0

Then there was the change to the 500-1000 rating system.

Rating reductions used to start at 850 rating.

500 + 175 = 675

850 - 175 = 675

In other words it was half way.

I reckon that's the perfect place to start, only 25 away from adept?? I wasn't moaning at it when i first signed up.

I think now that the rating decreases start lower down it should possibly be lowered to 650 as a starting point.

If this is how it's calculated anyways.

I think I should have started off at 950

But 650?? sounds a bit too low to me, guess i'm just used to seeing 675 all the time.

i dont think it could be much more fair in both respects that for the players that arent as good and that for those pro/newbs asi it is a fair way from pro and novice and not far from adept

The total rankings range is 500-1000.

The range where rankings work normally (without edge modification) is 600-900.

The initial point had to be a low number within this range, but high enough so you wouldn't slip out of this range while learning the game. Also it needed to fit in with the grade titles, a newbie shouldn't really be considered "adept".

Given these factors 675 suffices. However, any number meeting the above criteria would have done, ranking is all relative.
